The Town of Westport, MA has levels of Trihalomethanes above Drinking Water Standards. Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Tests results for the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2012 as well as the 1st quarter of 2013 shows that our system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for Trihalomethanes. The standard for Trihalomethanes is 0.080 mg/L. The average level for Trihalomethanes for the 3rd quarter of 2012 was 0.09817 mg/L; the average level for the 4th quarter of 2012 was 0.09557 mg/L; and the average level for the 1st quarter of 2013 was 0.09547 mg/L.
What should I do?
You do not need to use an alternative (e.g. bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
What does this mean?
This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing Trihalomethanes (TTHM’s) in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys or central nervous system and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
What happened? What is being done?
We will increase flushing the water distribution system. We will sample the water at the entry point, mid point and end point to evaluate the results and plan accordingly to address this water quality compliance issue and correct the problem.
For more information, please contact Linda Correia at (508) 674-2832, 66 Katie Court, Fall River, Ma 02720. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. This notice is being sent to you by the
Town of Westport PWS ID#: 4334090
Date distributed: 4/17/2013.
PUBLIC NOTICE
The Fall River Water Division is implementing major electrical improvements at our Drinking Water Treatment Facility. This requires at least two temporary shutdowns of the facility (meaning no water shall be pumped). The shutdowns shall be scheduled for Sunday mornings as this is our lowest demand period.
The planned shutdowns are as follows:
- May 12, 2013 – estimate a 4 hour shutdown.
- May 26, 2013 – estimate a 6 hour shutdown.
There is also the potential for shutdowns on May 19 and/or June 2 dependent on the rate of construction.
During these shutdowns we shall use the limited water in our storage tanks. WE ASK THAT ALL USERS MINIMIZE THEIR WATER USE!
Customers may experience low water pressure, rusty water and in some cases short term loss of water during the shutdown.
Please CONSERVE during these dates.
