Westport's Veterans Day Ceremony
We don't know them all, but we owe them all
The Westport Veterans' Service Officer invites all community members to attend the Westport Veterans Day Ceremony to honor all who have served in the United Stated Armed Forces.
The ceremony will start at 10 AM at the flag pole at Beech Grove Cemetery (corner of Main Road and Hixbridge Road).
Veterans Day is observed annually on November 11, the anniversary of the end of World War I. It is a tribute to all the men and women who left their homes, families, and friends to serve our country, and deserve recognition, support, and gratitude.
Program participants include:
- Introduction: Carol Freitas, Westport Veterans Service Officer
- Host Organization: Veterans of Foreign Wars W. A. & R. Ouellette Post 8502
- Keynote Speaker: Major George Stelljes, US Army Retired
- Select Board: Shana Shufelt, Chair, Westport Select Board
This year will also include the winner of a high school student writing contest reading their submission on “What Veterans Day Means to Me.” Submissions are due to the Westport Veterans Service Officer by November 3, 2021, and should be submitted via email to freitasc@westport-ma.gov. Submissions should be no more than two typed pages and must be the student’s original composition. Prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third place submissions.
Coffee & refreshments will follow at the Town Hall Annex Gym (856 Main Road).
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Town Hall Annex Gym.
This year we are holding a Student Writing Contest for 9th - 12th grade Westport students based on the theme "What Veterans Day Means to Me." Students should submit their entry to freitasc@westport-ma.gov no later than November 3, 2021, along with this completed Submission Form.
Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place.
1st - $100 and will read their entry at the ceremony
2nd & 3rd - $50 each and they will be recognized at the ceremony.
Entries should be no more than 2 typed pages and must be the student's original composition.
