Disabilities Planning Committee Public Input Meeting 10/14/08
The newly-appointed Disabilities Planning Committee invites people with disabilities and/or their family members to participate in a public meeting on Tuesday October 14, at 11:00 AM, in the Town Hall basement. Appointed by the Board of Selectmen at the BOS meeting on August 8, 2008 in response to letters from Westport residents about the problems with the lack of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the committee is charged with learning more about the needs of people with disabilities. They will be holding a series of public meetings between now and the Town Meeting in May, 2009.
The Committee is eager to learn about any issues faced by people with disabilities in Westport. “We are especially interested to hear from young adults with disabilities,” said Committee member Norma Judson. They don’t have any advocacy group as do older people or school-aged children.” If people need any accommodations, such as a sign language interpreter, large print materials or a reader, please contact the committee chair person, Elaine Ostroff at 508 636 6537, as soon as possible.
The purpose of the Disabilities Planning Committee is to develop the information and materials needed for the Town to establish a Disabilities Commission at the 2009 Town Meeting. This includes preparing the bylaws that the Commission will follow; gathering input from the community on the issues faced by people with disabilities; and educating the community on the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act as they apply to businesses and to Town and state government.
